Theatre In York |
 |
 |
There’s a wide range of performing arts on the go
in York, from tongue-in-cheek ghost walks to Russian drama
premieres, if you’ve got the acting bug it’s
time you visited one of York’s theatre venues for
a great night out.
In impressive surroundings and directly opposite the City
Art Gallery, York Theatre Royal [map] at St Leonard’s Place has an extensive programme
of new and familiar plays. See new interpretations of
classics and internationally famous pieces in the elaborate
main theatre.
Alternatively, check out The Studio [map] for dynamic new productions from such exciting groups
as Pilot Theatre Company and Full Body And The
Voice.
York Theatre Royal [map] is host to Berwick Kayler’s pantomime and
if you’re visiting in December, January or February
this is definitely the show to catch. If you think pantomime
is about washed up Australian soap stars singing out of
tune to audiences of uninterested children, think again.
Berwick Kayler’s pantomime sells in excess of 20,000
tickets and is an absolute tradition amongst York citizens
who often visit the show several times and enjoy the razor-sharp
script and perfectly over the top acting. Tickets go on
sale the previous April and it's vital to book well in
advance to have any hope of getting a seat.
Catch those touring West End shows at The Grand Opera
House [map],
Cumberland Street. If you love a musical this is the theatre
for you. The Grand Opera House has a programme steered
towards family entertainment and plays host to a range
of vibrant and exciting acts.
The Friargate Theatre [map] at Lower Friargate is an intimate venue, which proves
a great way to enjoy drama if you’re on a tight
budget. The Riding Lights Theatre Company perform
on this stage during the summer season and star in occasional
out of season performances too.
The Joseph Rowntree Theatre [map], Haxby
Road, is home to the areas amateur theatre companies
and regularly presents family-orientated performances.
See the talent of the future at Trinity Hall Studio
Theatre [map],
Monkgate. The Stagecoach Youth Theatre stages regular
reviews and performances here.
