| One of York’s
most famous landmarks is the racecourse at Knavesmire. This is a perfect place for a flutter
on the horses and also offers a great day out for all
the family. With regular ladies days and family days, a visit to the racecourse
is a must. The popularity of the course is such that
it is preparing to host Royal Ascot in 2005.
If you want to get involved and feel the need for speed
there’s a top karting venue right
on York’s doorstep. Located at Monks Cross, close
to the shopping outlet, F1 Racing Premier Karting [map] is one of the top karting venues in the region. Get
your friends together and head there for karting fun
with friendly staff on hand to ensure your safety. The
venue is particularly appealing to large groups and
stag and hen parties.
After whizzing around the circuit a few times you’ll
be ready for some liquid refreshment and for this there’s
a handy bar nearby from which to watch other races.
Just outside of York in Melbourne, which is close to
Pocklington, is the York Dragway arena [map].
If you’ve never experienced drag racing before
be prepared as it’s noisy, it’s rough, it’s
sometimes dangerous but it’s also lots of fun.
Watch races with names such as “Street Fighter
Spectacular” and “Super Beetle Shootout”
and ask yourself if the aim of the game is to win a
race or to just create as many pile-ups as possible,
either way it’s still a great spectator sport.
