Guide To South East London |
 |
 |
Culture and community
go hand in hand in this area of London. From the creative
energies of the South Bank to the smaller arts centres
out in the suburbs, you’ll find plenty of lively
events wherever you choose to stay.
Watch some of the biggest names in dance at touring productions
throughout the year, taking place at The Southwark
Playhouse [map],
Southwark Bridge Road. The current programme includes
a range of familiar faces performing on stage. Alternatively,
check out the best in ballet and contemporary dance at The Broadway Theatre [map],
Rushey Green, Catford Bridge.
Southwark is also the place to be for history lovers and
those who are searching for a more unusual slice of London
life. See how fire fighting has evolved over more than
300 years with a visit to The London Fire Brigade Museum [map],
Winchester House, Southwark Bridge Road, Southwark. Take
a guided tour and discover a wealth of information beginning
with the Great Fire of London in 1666 to technological
advances in the present day and future of the service.
The Southbank is awash with excellent art. Choose from
the famous Tate Modern [map] for some of the hot exhibitions that everybody is talking
about or pop into the Tate’s nearest rival, The
Saatchi Gallery [map],
County Hall, Belvedere Road, for the latest top designers
and modern artists.
Experience the gentle world of watercolour at The Bankside
Gallery [map],
Hopton Street, Southwark. This gallery is home to the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Society
of Painter-Printmakers so visitors can expect
an eclectic range of exhibitions from two of the oldest
societies of their kind in the world. Prominent artists
in these fields regularly hold talks here and visitors
can take advantage of some interesting tours, including
the opportunity to get involved in some practical experience.
If you want to listen to some live music you’ll
find everything in South East London from jazz to the
blues to the latest in pop music, but this area is particularly
proud of its association with classical music.
The Royal Festival Hall [map],
Belvedere Road, hosts a wide selection of orchestral and
big band events. This is also the place where the world
class BBC Symphony Orchestra does much of its live
recording.
