the ages seafarers have returned from their global journeys
with ingredients from far and wide. So it’s no surprise
that Plymouth is a great place for international nosh.
These days the usual Italian, Indian and Chinese restaurants
have been joined by Malaysian, French, Greek, Thai and
Spanish eateries.
One of the most popular restaurants in the city at the
moment is Wah Tin Garden [map] on North Hill, a thriving eatery that comes highly recommended
by locals. Along with Peking and Cantonese food, this
place also specialises in Malaysian dishes, all at reasonable
prices. While for those who prefer to eat at home there
is a takeaway service.
For more far eastern food try Thai House [map] on Notte Street, where authentic Thai dishes are served
in an Oriental setting by staff wearing national costumes.
There are plenty of vegetarian dishes on the menu and
the restaurant also serves authentic Singha and European
beers.
If your taste buds would prefer a more European flavour,
check out Café Rouge [map] on Wimple Street, a classic French wine bar and
restaurant. Serving traditional French food with a focus on fish and seafood, such as salmon, scallops,
red fillet and prawns, this place brings a hint of France
to Plymouth.
Another of the city’s popular French eateries is Chez Nous [map] on Frankfort Gate, which has been pulling in the crowds
for two decades. This place has also won a Michelin
Star and three AA rosettes.
Plymouth also has a small selection of Spanish restaurants,
including Lorenzo’s [map] on Atheneum Place, which is hugely popular with the
young trendy crowd and theatregoers. This restaurant serves
a good selection of tapas along with other authentic
dishes, such as nachos and paella.
For a night of plate-smashing fun then try the Grecian
Taverna [map] on Market Avenue, which offers a wide range of authentic
Greek cuisine, as well as English and international
dishes. Then, after your meal, you can smash a few plates
and dance the night away to traditional Greek tunes. It’s
definitely a great place for a celebration!
As with all major cities, there are plenty of Italian,
Indian and Chinese restaurants to choose from too. But
among the best ones are Positano [map] for pasta and pizza, Moghul’s [map] for curry, and Ocean Palace [map] for Dim Sum and Cantonese.
