Plymouth has a wealth
of public transport operating in the city centre, making
it fast and easy for you to get to where you’re
going. For a start the city’s bus service offers a frequent and reliable mode of transport to get to the main tourist attractions and surrounding areas. Plymouth City Bus and First Devon and Cornwall are the main operators in the area, with hundreds of buses providing a comprehensive network of services across the city, seven days a week. Of course, the best way to get around Plymouth is on foot as the city is relatively compact and easy to explore, but if you would rather save your energy for shopping and sightseeing then you could opt for the door-to-door service of a taxi. Taxis are very easy to find, especially in the busy shopping area and at the train and bus stations. All of Plymouth’s major cab firms operate 24 hours a day. There are two types of taxis in Plymouth; public hire taxis (black hackney cabs) can be hailed and stopped anywhere at any time, while private hire taxis must be pre-booked in advance. For those who opt to take their own car into the city, there are park and ride schemes in operation at Coypool and Milehouse, where you can leave your vehicle at the car parks and take a bus ride into the city centre. Rail and ride also operates from Ivybridge train station (just off the A38) and from Liskeard and Gunnislak train stations (on the Cornish side of Plymouth).
