Vegetarian In North London |
 |
 |
It may sometimes
feel like meat lovers get all the choice with almost every
restaurant catering to their carnivorous tastes, however
north London does have something to offer vegetarians
as well.
The Blue Legume [map] on Stoke Newington Church Street is a small café
style eatery with a unique but relaxed atmosphere. Whether
you want the satisfaction of a full meal or just a passing
nibble from their great range of cakes and pastries just
feel free to stop by. The menu includes touches of Italian,
Moroccan and Turkish flavours and also offers a good range
of juices and herbal teas.
The street is also home to one of the most celebrated
vegetarian restaurants in the area, Rasa [map].
This pink walled eatery offers a meat free menu boasting
a range of South Indian cuisine but mainly tasty vegetable
Keralan curries.
Organic 13 [map] is a vegetarian café
and juice bar where you can sit and enjoy a meal or simply
pop in to buy organic vegetarian goods. The menu includes
sunflower pate and cabbage and seaweed salad all served
in a community atmosphere. For café cuisine, you
could also try St. Paul's Steiner Café [map] in Highbury.
Heartstone [map] is another restaurant catering for vegetarians and the
pro organic. As well as hearty meals, this Camden eatery
also offers holistic massage, so if you’re stressed
and hungry this is the ideal place.
Going out with people who have opposing philosophies on
meat eating debate can be tricky at best. The carnivores
can’t seem to enjoy a meal without that controversial
ingredient, while the vegetarians feel that they shouldn’t
have to compromise on choice because of the company they
keep. The solution may come in the form of the following
restaurants.
Rasa Travacore [map], is just across the
road from its older sibling Rasa [map] on Stoke
Newington Church Street. However unlike its neighbour
the menu features meat, fish and vegetarian meals. The
cooking style is also from Kerala but with focus on the
Syrian Christian style which uses chillies and coconut
milk to create many of the flavours.
If you like Indian food then Masala Zone [map] in Islington is another good bet as they have created
a completely separate kitchen for vegetarian cooking.
There’s plenty for curious palates to try at this
friendly eatery which can also cater for people with special
dietary requirements (however if this is a particular
concern phone beforehand).
The Duke of Cambridge [map] offers a different slant on the gastro pub experience
in north London by offering only organic (or as organic
as possible) food and drink. The menu includes meals for
both vegetarians and carnivores as well as organic beer,
wine and spirits to accompany them.
