Some kids can be
so full of energy its hard to keep their enthusiasm from
causing devastation to your home and your sanity, so when
all they want to do is play, what is there to keep the
kids at bay in and around Newcastle.
A day at the beach can be just the thing to entertain
the kids when the weather is fine, frolicking in the sea,
making sandcastles, flying kites and eating seaside fare.
If you want to head for the beachy coast then Whitley
Bay [map], Tynemouth [map] and Saltburn [map] are all quite close, with Tynemouth being just seven miles
away.
But if your kids are up for some hydro-fun when the weather
is not so good, then the North East is home to the largest
indoor water park in the UK, Wet ‘N’ Wild
[map].
Located in North Shields, it’s a one-stop shop for
fun – just pay once and the rides and flumes are
free all day! The park is open from 10:00am everyday but
there are restricted opening times during the winter.
For more indoor fun, you could take a trip to Metroland
[map] , the largest indoor funfair in Europe. This attraction
first opened its doors in 1988 and since then has been
keeping young people thoroughly thrilled. Despite being
indoors you can still expect to see the usual fun fair
favourites including a rollercoaster and swinging pirate
ship. Tickets are available for a single turn on an individual
ride or as a pass for all day fun.
If animal antics are more likely to entertain your young
people then there’s quite a bit of choice around
Newcastle. There’s a small children’s zoo
[map] in Jesmond Dene with many animals and birds including
pygmy goats and colourful cockatoos.
There’s also a Wildfowl & Wetland Trust visitors
centre [map] in Washington, where kids can take part in Downy Duckling
Days as well as other events and tactile exhibits throughout
the year.
For a day which combines creature features, crafts and
other activities, take a trip to the Whitehouse Farm
Centre [map] in Morpeth. On the animal side, kids will see and learn
about farmyard animals and may even get a chance to see
and stroke some baby ones. The farm also has llamas, wallabies
and a pets section.
There are also lots of other activities for the kids at
Whitehouse Farm Centre, especially during the school holidays,
including face painting and candle making as well as go
karting and tobogganing. And if your kids are older they
may want to try their hand at wood turning or wax sculpture!
And don’t forget that during the summer Europe’s
largest travelling fair makes its home on Newcastle’s Town Moor [map].
The fact that there is no entrance fee means that a trip
to the fair can be as expensive (or not) as you like.
This is great event for the whole family to enjoy during
the month of June.
