GO Theatre In Newcastle

Theatre in Newcastle Upon Tyne Newcastle’s theatre scene has a very healthy glow about it with plenty for drama lovers to choose from. And because this city loves its drama the theatre scene goes from strength to strength.

As well as being home to several theatre venues, the city is also home to a number of theatre companies, in fact it is has been the third home of the world renown Royal Shakespeare Company since 1977, who annually bring their productions to the city.

One of the main co-hosts of the RSC’s programme in Newcastle is the Theatre Royal [map] . This impressive 1830s theatre, located on the famous Grey Street, is probably the premier theatre venue in the city, with many touring companies choosing it for their regional productions. It is also the main base of Opera North.

In terms of what’s on, the Theatre Royal [map] always has a good mix of entertainments on in a season. The programme usually includes drama, opera and dance but you will also find comedy, concerts and family events on the bill. In addition the theatre also runs a programme of talks and workshops for those who want to get more involved.

The other RSC co-host venue is the Newcastle Playhouse [map]. Located in the Haymarket part of the city, this is a much more modern theatre. The venue is currently undergoing an £8.5 million refurbishment which will result in enhanced performance spaces when it reopens in 2005. Events usually held here have been moved to venues in Darlington, Gateshead and other parts of Newcastle; this includes work by Northern Stage Company, who base themselves at the Playhouse.

The Live Theatre [map], in the heart of Newcastle’s Quayside, usually hosts smaller independent productions. The theatre aims to help develop new writing and retain acting talent in the region so expect to see the cream of the local crop rise to centre stage. The building is also home to the Live Theatre Company, a vibrant company that has enlisted the help of Tim Healey, Denise Welch, Robson Green and other familiar northern faces to promote its cause.

More young talent can be found at the Young People’s Theatre, the oldest established youth theatre in the city. Their home is the People’s Theatre [map] in Heaton, where you can see their drama productions as well as other local entertainments.

You may also find a musical or two on at Newcastle City Hall [map] amidst its programme of live music, as well as some drama on the menu at the Newcastle Arts Centre [map] beneath its gallery of art.
