When you think
of Newcastle, the first and possibly the only sport that
comes to mind is football, but Newcastle has a lot more
pulse pumping pursuits for you to enjoy.
The city’s first love is undoubtedly football and
the focus of its affection goes to Newcastle United.
The team is one of the best in the country and has recently
increased the capacity at its home ground of St James’
Park [map] to accommodate the wealth of fans that turn up week in,
week out, to support the team.
However the city also has a first class rugby team in
the Newcastle Falcons. They also compete
against the best teams in the country, and in Europe,
but unlike their footballing neighbours have managed to
win a trophy or two in recent years. In addition the city
also has an amateur rugby team, the Newcastle
Knights who play rugby league.
If you enjoy spectator sports, then another top team to
go and watch are the Newcastle Vipers, the local
ice hockey team. Although the passion for the sport can’t
rival that of Canada, Britain does have its own leagues
and the Vipers play in the Elite Ice Hockey League, with
their home games at the Metro Arena [map].
The other team to have their home games at the Arena are
the Newcastle Eagles, who you can go and watch
play in the premier British Basketball league.
If your sporting passions feed on speed then Newcastle
can cater for you as well with a racecourse, dog track
and speedway circuit to enjoy…
For horse racing, there’s Newcastle Racecourse
[map] , one of the busiest turf courses on the racing circuit.
With 32 meetings a year that cover the flat and the hunt
season, including Beeswing Ladies Day and Northumberland
Plate three-day Festival, there’s plenty of horse
racing to be had just 15 minutes from the city centre.
Newcastle Brough Park Greyhound Stadium [map] is where to get your fix of hasty hounds. Racing takes
place on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings, and
when you need a break from your winning streak, you could
dine at the glass fronted trackside restaurant.
Also located at the Brough Park Stadium is Newcastle
Speedway [map].
Speedway is the sport where riders ‘speed’
round a dirt track on their motorbikes and Newcastle has
its own team of rough riders in the Newcastle Diamonds.
You can catch them competing in the premier league at
events throughout the season, which runs from March to
October.
For human speed without the machine, you can watch some
of the fastest people in the world in action at the Gateshead
International Stadium [map].
It plays host to major national and international events,
like the IAAF Grand Prix, where you can see top
athletes compete. But if you’d rather perform your
own feats of athleticism, the Stadium is home to the Gateshead
Harriers athletics club, and the track is open to
runners and joggers.
Runner may also be interested to know that every year
the area hosts the Great North Run, a half-marathon
event that is attempted by thousands of people each year.
The event usually takes place in September and features
runners of all abilities including celebs and elite athletes.
If you want to get involved in other sports then the leisure
centres in and around the city are a great place to
start. Newcastle Leisure have ten centres, five of which
are swimming pools, that have a wide range of activities
including karate, yoga and aerobics, with tennis, table
tennis, badminton and football facilities that can be
booked by the public.
