Sandwich Bars in Newcastle |

There are sandwiches
like your mum used to make, and there are sandwiches you
find in the supermarket…but over the years the humble
sandwich has been transformed into a specialty cuisine,
and in Newcastle you can enter a world where the sandwich
has become interesting.
No longer is the sandwich a slab of cheese in plain white
bread, it is now something far more exotic. Although the
formula is the same as it always has been - a flour based
casing for a favourite filling or two – that’s
about the only thing it has in common with what you found
in your school lunchbox.
Dene’s Deli [map] is the pioneer of the modern sandwich, and has won awards
for its work with the art form. The variety extends to
over 100 filling alternatives that can be enjoyed on a
choice of breads, including the Newcastle famed stottie.
They cover the whole range from the straightforward ham
on white sliced to Pepper salami & Normandy chutney
on poppy seed knot. And even vegetarians should find they
are well catered for on the menu. The only downside is
that Dene’s is located a little out of the city
centre on Jesmond Road beyond the University of Northumberland,
but sandwich lovers don’t have to miss out, as they
do have a delivery service available.
For a lunchtime alternative close to the city centre,
you could try Smoothe Wrap [map] on High Bridge Square. As the name suggests fresh smoothies
and wraps are the cuisine of choice but it’s the
global flavours that are the real attraction as the menu
features wrap fillings inspired by Jamaica, Mexico and
Thailand, amongst others. Smoothe Wrap is open everyday
from 10:00am except Sunday.
O’Briens is a popular chain of sandwich shops
that have outlets as far afield as Saudi Arabia and Singapore.
As well as their range of ready-styled “customer
favourites”, you can also create your own sandwich
to suit the mood you’re in at the time. Newcastle
has a number of locations where you can sample O’Briens
lunchtime snacks including Eldon Garden [map],
Grainger Street [map]
and Pilgrim Street [map].
