Rugby in Newcastle |
 |
 |
While
many people have a passion for the round ball sport, there
are many others who think the oval ball sport of rugby
is king, and in Newcastle there are a number of teams
you can pledge your allegiance to.
There are two main types of rugby to support in Newcastle,
rugby union and rugby league, but it is in rugby union
that the city has had the most success.
The Newcastle Falcons are a top rugby union side,
not just in the North East, but also amongst all the professional
teams in the country. The team compete against 12 other
teams in rugby’s premier league, and in April 2004
the team won the Powergen Cup, the only rugby competition
in England that involves teams of all levels.
The club’s current star player is Jonny Wilkinson,
who also played a vital role in England’s World
Cup win of 2004. But the team has had some big names in
the past including former England captain Rob Andrew,
All Black international Va'iga Tuigamala and South African
international Mark Andrews.
You can see the team perform against the best of British
and international teams at their home ground on the outskirts
of Newcastle, Kingston Park [map].
However the team does sometimes play big matches at Gateshead
International Stadium [map].
But the rugby team that can call the International Stadium
their home is Gateshead Thunder, with
the venue being renamed the “Thunderdome”
on match days. Gateshead Thunder is a professional rugby
league side that play in Rugby League Division Two. The
team were once part of the Super League, the premier division
in rugby league, before the club merged with the Hull
Sharks in 1999. Since then the club has risen again from
its former ashes to lead the way in rugby league for the
region.
Newcastle does have its own rugby league side, called
the Newcastle Knights. Their home ground is Sutherland
Park [map],
where they play matches in Rugby League Conference, a
national competition comprising of thirty teams from around
England and Wales. |
