Guide To Newcastle |
 |
 |
When the culture
vultures swoop, they’ll find easy pickings in Newcastle
as the city is ripe with performing arts, visual arts
and a host of other arty attractions.
If art is your cultural pursuit of choice then there are
several places in and around the city to enjoy the visual
arts. Whether it’s traditional old masters or contemporary
arts and crafts that take your fancy, you’ll find
there’s plenty to suit you. The two main venues
are the Laing Gallery [map] and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art [map].
Founded in 1901 by a Scottish wine and spirit merchant,
the Laing Gallery has recently celebrated its centenary
with a major refurbishment which has not only restored
its distinctive tower to its former glory, but resulted
in the addition of a new space for the collection of watercolours,
and a dedicated space where visitors of all ages can learn
more about art.
Meanwhile on the Gateshead side of the river you’ll
find one of the newest kids on the culture block, the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. With an ambitious
programme of constanly changing international exhibitions,
the Baltic has quickly established itself as a premier
arts venue in the region.
For more energetic arts take a look at what’s on
at the local theatres. Although the Newcastle Opera
House [map] has recently closed down there are still plenty of other
venues to try. For dance and drama the elegant Theatre
Royal [map] has an ecclectic programme of events for you to choose
from.
To support the best of local talent head for the Live
Theatre [map],
where new writers and up-and-coming actors get to work
with the best of the regions theatre community to produce
interesting contemporary pieces.
If music is your cultural form of choice, then opera and
classical music can be found at the Theatre Royal [map], Newcastle City Hall [map] and occassionally music with a cultural twist can be enjoyed
at the Metro Arena [map].
And soon the area will have another arts venue to add
to the comprensive list, The Sage [map].
Due to open in the winter of 04/05, this venue aims to
be “an international home for music and musical
discovery” on the Gateshead side of the Tyne.
