Universities in Manchester |

Manchester is home
to Europe’s largest student population drawing
people from around the globe to its four universities.
The University of Manchester [map] grew from its humble beginnings as Owens College in
1851 to become the first of the UK's great civic universities.
It now has courses covering almost every subject, and
has more than 18,000 full-time students, including 2,500
international students, from over 120 countries.
The university's size gives students a wide and flexible
choice in courses and in lifestyle, with outstanding facilities
for learning and leisure. And with 3.6 million books and
more than one million manuscript items, the University
Library is one of the three largest in the country.
Next to this university lies the Manchester Metropolitan
University [map] (MMU), which has a staggering 33,000 students, making
it the largest non-collegiate university in the UK. MMU
became a Polytechnic in 1970 and a University in 1992,
but boasts a history of achievement to rival many more-established
institutions. It is based on seven campuses, five in the
Manchester area and two at Alsager and Crewe in Cheshire.
The University of Salford [map],
which is actually closer to the city centre than the University
of Manchester, is internationally recognised as an enterprising
university. Amongst its achievements is the pioneering
of the world’s first degree in pop music.
UMIST [map] – University of Manchester Institute of Science
and Technology – was described in The Guardian newspaper
as the dominant force in scientific and technical subjects.
The award-winning university, which was founded
in 1824 by Manchester’s business community, has
a student population of more than 6,500. UMIST has a strong
reputation for innovation and was first university in
the UK to offer a chemical engineering degree.
Not strictly a university but well worth a mention here
is the Royal Northern College of Music [map],
which was founded in the late 19th century by Sir Charles
Hallé, creator of the famous Hallé Orchestra.
