The Morning After in Manchester |
 |
 |
If you’re
feeling worse for wear after a night out or just want
a hearty breakfast before setting off on a day of sightseeing,
then you’re in luck because Manchester has a good
choice of cafés, bistros and classic greasy spoons.
As you would expect in the North West’s number one
city, there is the usual array of fast food restaurants,
including McDonalds, Burger King and KFC.
But if you’re after something a little different
then why sample the delights at Café Pop [map] on Oldham Street in the Northern Quarter. Here you’ll
find walls decorated with Top of the Pops album covers,
as well as the usual combinations of all-day breakfasts,
including a vegetarian option. It’s classic kitsch
and well worth a visit just for the décor!
Another locally famous café is Love Saves the
Day, which has two branches on Tib Street [map] in the Northern Quarter and now also on Deansgate [map].
Both offer a full range of deli products as well as an
eat-in menu, which includes homemade soups, salads, cold
platters and a selection of hot meals. There are also
options on the daily specials board to choose from.
If it’s traditional English unhealthy food you’re
after to line your stomach after a night on the town then
try Famous Sam’s Chophouse [map],
just off Cross Street. A revival of a traditional Victorian
chophouse dating back to 1872, Sam's continues the success
of its sister restaurant Mr Thomas's [map] on Cross Street. The restaurant offers classic British
food at its best, from jugged hare to steak and kidney
pudding, grilled Manx kippers to roast leg of lamb. And
there are lots of ales and wines – or just soft
drinks, if you prefer – to wash down a great meal
with.
If you fancy heading out of town for breakfast then why
not head to the scenic district of Chorlton, where you’ll
find plenty or cafés and restaurants to choose
from. One option here is The Nose [map],
part of the ever-growing Nose café bar chain, which
has other branches in West Didsbury and Wilmslow. There
is a wide breakfast menu and a limited choice of blackboard
specials and sandwiches, along with a good choice of coffees
and soft drinks.
Also in Chorlton is My Place Café,
which attracts both single diners and families who just
love its competitively priced, traditional English food.
On the menu is an All Day Breakfast, which consists of
bacon, sausage, egg, fried bread, tomatoes, beans, mushrooms
and black pudding, plus toast and a pot of tea or cup
of coffee. Alternatives include fish of the day, pizzas
and homemade pie of the week, or you can choose from the
wide selection of sandwiches, toasties and burgers.
Finally, if you head out to Didsbury then why not try Time for Tea café in the heart of the village,
which offers home-cooked English dishes including breakfast
with all the trimmings.
