| If the shopping
areas of Harrogate are too busy for you and you want to
experience a gentler pace of life head to the historic
town of Ripon [map].
Ripon is akin to a miniature York and offers some excellent
shopping venues around the recently refurbished Market
Place which also provides short stay city centre parking
spaces.
The retail environment consists of historic buildings,
some of which date back more than 200 years, and thus
create a quaint “olde worlde” atmosphere.
You could venture around the cobbled streets of Ripon
and see how many bargains and unusual gifts you can pick
up.
The Old Market Place itself offers very traditional
services including chip shops, several very good pubs
and post offices and banks. There’s also several
butchers and other food stores where you’ll find
all the ingredients for a tasty meal if you’re self-catering
back in Harrogate.
Fishergate is more of a student area and offers
a vibrant mix of bookshops, shoe shops and clothes shops.
You’ll also be able to pick up a bargain at Oxfam
or Scope as well as the other charity shops in the area.
North Street is one of the busiest streets in Ripon.
Home to Monty’s nightclub but during the day it’s
a busy shopping avenue appealing to the fairer
sex. Offering nail extensions, hair salons, beauty treatments,
chiropodists, health shops, this is the street to feel
rejuvenated.
Kirkgate is a beautiful cobbled street offering
some fantastically authentic shops, as well as the main
restaurant area. Take a break from your hectic day and
pop into Cibo or Mario’s Restaurant
27 for a quick caffeine hit.
If you want to do all of your shopping under one roof
head to the modern comforts of the Moss Arcade.
Here you’ll find music shops and popular clothing
brands, as well as the handily placed library next door.
