There are plenty
of beautiful places to visit in and around Harrogate,
so get out and about during your visit and see the stunning
sights on offer.
Knaresborough Castle and Museum [map] offers a great
day out for all the family. Knaresborough's royal castle
stands towering over the River Nidd, a symbol of the wealth
of Medieval Kings. Most of what remains today was built
by Edward II in the early fourteenth century, although
there are still remains of King John's moat. The Castle
Tour reveals the Castle’s interesting past and
reveals the lives of its occupants.
Join the Castle Tour and discover the mysterious underground Sallyport or explore the Keep and its dungeon at your own pace.
Knaresborough Castle is open all year round, but the historical
elements are closed during the winter months.
Another great visitor attraction in Knaresborough is the
magical wonder of Mother Shipton’s Cave.
Mother Shipton is the world’s most famous prophetess.
She lived more than 500 years ago during the reign of
King Henry VIII. Diarist Samuel Pepys wrote how Mother
Shipton foretold of the Great Fire of London in 1666 and
her prophetic visions were well known and feared.
Thousands of people flock to see the Cave where Mother
Shipton was born and stop to gaze in wonder at the Petrifying
Wall, where objects turn to stone before your very
eyes. Before you leave don't forget to pause to make a
wish at The Wishing Wall, which has a very high
success rate.
Mother Shipton’s Cave and The Petrifying Wall can
be found at Prophecy House [map], Knaresborough.
Harrogate’s RHS Harlow Carr Garden offers
a relaxing retreat from the stresses of every day life.
With seven themed gardens reflecting gardening
evolution over the past 200 years this garden is the ideal
place to learn some new gardening skills and admire the
work of the experts.
