Knaresborough's royal castle stands towering over the River Nidd, a symbol of the wealth of Medieval Kings. Most of what remains today was built by Edward II in the early fourteenth century, although there are still remains of King John's moat. Knaresborough Castle is open all year round, but the historical elements are closed during the winter months. She lived more than 500 years ago during the reign of King Henry VIII. Diarist Samuel Pepys wrote how Mother Shipton foretold of the Great Fire of London in 1666 and her prophetic visions were well known and feared. Thousands of people flock to see the Cave where Mother Shipton was born and stop to gaze in wonder at the Petrifying Wall, where objects turn to stone before your very eyes.
