Glasgow City
Council’s information department offer a comprehensive
information service for the community, meeting the needs
of students, businesses, visitors and local people.
Among other things it provides a city wide network of community libraries, cutting edge Real Learning
Centres, a mobile library service and the
world renowned Mitchell Library.
Situated on North Street in the heart of the city, The
Mitchell [map] is Glasgow’s main library and offers a range of
information and enquiry services. You can use the collections
at the Mitchell whether or not you live in Glasgow and
you don’t need to be a member of Glasgow City
Libraries Service to do so.
Along with thousands of books, journals, CDs and tapes,
this library also houses the archives of Glasgow
City Council and its predecessor authorities.
For those who would like to surf the Net, research
their family history or perhaps learn how to use
a spreadsheet, the council has set up a number of Real
Learning Centres within Glasgow’s community libraries.
These centres provide free access to state-of-the-art
computers, and offer vocational and leisure based learning
opportunities, including hands on workshops and
online courses.
To make the most of the resources available at Glasgow’s
community libraries you will have to be a member, and
anyone who lives, works or studies in Glasgow can join
the service. All you need to do is pop into your nearest
library with two types of identification, such as a
rent book, driving licence or passport, and fill in
the application form.
However if you are only visiting the city you can still
borrow from any of the libraries by exchanging your
local library card for a Glasgow card for the duration
of your stay. To do this you will need to take two forms
of identification with you.
