| Although only a
small city Edinburgh has two main stations Haymarket and Waverley [map].
Waverly is the main station and is conveniently
positioned between Old Town and New Town.
The station is well served by the bus network and is easy
to get to on foot however drivers may have problems trying
to stay at the station for any length of time.
The Haymarket station is the secondary station
located about two miles from Waverley train station. Trains
to Glasgow, the north and the west coast can also be taken from here. And taking a trip north to Fife, Perth or beyond will be rewarded with
a journey across the Forth Bridge, one of the greatest
achievements of Victorian engineering.
Taking the train to go cross-country can sometimes prove
a little frustrating with the UK rail system becoming
increasingly known for its delays and last minute train
cancellations however services on the major routes are
less prone to this disruption.
Most travel within Scotland is run by Scotrail,
they run the majority of rural services and those to major
Scottish cities including Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness. The journey to Glasgow
takes less than an hour and services run approximately
every 15 minutes.
There are also regular services between Edinburgh and
London run by GNER. The Flying Scotsman – named after the famous steam locomotive - takes
around four hours and goes via York and Newcastle.
Rail based day trips from London to Edinburgh leave
from Kings Cross at around 6.30am.
Virgin Trains also operate a number of services
to Edinburgh including those to and from Penzance and Brighton.
Tickets for train journeys can be purchased over the phone
from the rail operator or at the station, and fares vary
according to the journey and class of travel you choose. Savers and super saver tickets are available
for journeys between Saturday and Thursday as these are
considered to be the off peak times. Further savings can
be made on certain journeys by purchasing an Apex ticket 48 hours before you travel, but for the best deals book
two weeks in advance.
