Shedding a few
pounds should come easily to any shopper venturing to
Edinburgh as the variety of shops offer a refreshing change
from the average high street. Designer stores and high street stalwarts are interspersed with friendly boutiques, souvenir sellers and just a touch of something a little more eccentric. The compact but comfortably formed centre will be a joy for avid shoppers and those a little less enthusiastic, as no shop or stall is too far away from the one you’re at. For typically Scottish purchases shoppers could head down the Royal Mile [map], however the real shopping action will be found on Princes Street [map], described as ‘one of the world’s most spectacular shopping streets’. If high-end fashion is your forte then Scotland’s only Harvey Nichols, opened in 2002 by actor Ewan McGregor is a must. With a trip to the designer shops on George Street [map] a close second. For something a little more eclectic try Rose Street [map] (a lane behind Princes Street) for small jewellery and clothes shops, Victoria Street for specialist food stores and arts and crafts shops and the Grassmarket in the Old Town. Shops are usually open 9:00am to 5:30pm with late night shopping on Thursday, however some stores extend their hours in the summer to give shoppers more chance to fulfil their purchasing needs and desires. In addition, some of the shopping centres peppered around Edinburgh provide later than usual closing times all year round. As with most popular areas, it can get very busy especially on a Saturday… in the summer… during one of the city festivals. This is because as well as all the shoppers and tourists the pavements are also lined with street performers vying for your attention.
