Whether it’s
national or domestic, Union or League, Edinburgh is at
the heart of Scottish rugby. Nationally the Scottish team’s main competition is the 6 Nations, an annual event which sees the top northern hemisphere sides vying for the RBS 6 Nations trophy and ultimately the Grand Slam. As part of the 6 Nations event England and Scotland battle for the Calcutta Cup. Traditionally one of the competition’s most popular games, the clash is the oldest international rugby fixture in the world. In the past the Scottish team has had a number of great players, Gavin Hastings, who played his debut at the Murrayfield stadium [map], being one of the most famous. However one of the national side’s current stars is full-back Chris Paterson, who also plays for the professional team Edinburgh Rugby. Formerly known as the Edinburgh Reivers, Edinburgh Rugby play in the Celtic League, where teams from Scotland Ireland and Wales play for the title of ‘Celtic Champions’. Edinburgh Rugby is also making its mark in European rugby, being the first Scottish team to reach the Heineken Cup quarterfinals in 2004. Outside the star-studded arena of professional rugby union, Edinburgh has a wealth of clubs playing leagues across Scotland. Edinburgh side Boroughmuir is probably the most notable playing in the First Division of the Premier League in Scotland. However the capital also boasts four women’s teams Division One of the Scottish Women’s Rugby Union League, namely Murrayfield Wanderers W, Royal High, Watsonian W and Lismore. Edinburgh teams also feature strongly in the Scottish Rugby League Conference. Edinburgh Eagles are the most successful in the city with the Portobello Playboys joining them in the top flight. |
