Get away from the bustling city and find something inspiring
in the beautiful coast and countryside that Edinburgh
offers.
Packed with historic churches, castles, stately homes and stunning country parks,
you’re never far away from some amazing scenery.
With a wealth of country parks you’ll be spoilt
for choice when choosing a place to enjoy some quiet time. Beecraigs Country Park [map],
Linlithgow, offers a range of leisure and recreational
interests covering a huge 370 hectares. Bring the caravan
or tent and take advantage of the camping site and don’t forget your rod and reel as there’s
a fishing loch close by.
Dalkeith Country Park [map],
Dalkeith, is a rural estate surrounding Dalkeith Palace
– the country estate of the Buccleuch family. The
estate now offers a gift shop, cafeteria and huge adventure playground for the kids.
If you’ve ever wondered how candles are made, now
is the chance to find out with a visit to the delightful Carberry Candle Cottage [map],
Musselburgh. See candle demonstrations and give it a go
yourself, or let the professionals do their thing and
purchase the end result in the factory shop.
Check our the cars at The Stars Motor Museum [map],
Ingliston, Newbridge, a museum dedicated to the preservation
and restoration of film vehicles. The fascinating exhibits
include The Batmobile, Kitt from Knight
Rider and the Back To The Future De Lorean.
One of the best things about this museum is its James
Bond Collection including the Aston Martin DB5 and Lotus Esprit Turbo.
Perhaps you fancy a big day out with a small theme. The Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World [map] at Dobbies Garden World, Melville Nursery, Lasswade, is
an ideal day out for families with young children who
can enjoy an educational visit while the bugs and beasties
run and fly free. With daily handling sessions and an
amazing butterfly house, this is well worth a visit to
see some truly unusual species.
If you like your animals on a bigger scale pay a visit
to the world-famous Edinburgh Zoo [map].
Based at Corstorphine Road, Murrayfield, the zoo is home
to more than 1,000 rare and beautiful animals. See African
wild dogs and enjoy a safari ride through some exotic
scenery.
