Football in Edinburgh |

When you think
Scottish football usually the names of the country’s
two soccer giants Celtic and Rangers come
to mind. However not to be forgotten are Edinburgh’s
two main teams Heart of Midlothian known to most
as Hearts FC and Hibernian FC both of whom
play in the Scottish Premier League (SPL).
As with its English equivalent the Scottish Premier
League contains the country’s top football teams
all competing to be League Champions. It has been more
than eight years since a team other than Celtic or Rangers
have been able to claim the top spot however the top three
teams in the SPL at the end of the season have the chance
to go onto further glory in the two major European competitions
the Champions League and the UEFA cup. So
there’s a good chance that you could see an Edinburgh
club playing against European rivals next time round!
There are hundreds of smaller clubs who play regularly
in Edinburgh – even the cab trade has a team! However
the other notable Scottish capital football team is Livingstone
FC. Although not strictly an Edinburgh club anymore
they do have capital connections, as previously they were Meadowbank Thistle FC who had their home at the
Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh.
In terms of women’s football Scotland has
it’s own women’s league with over 40
teams across four divisions. Edinburgh has a number of
teams in the league including Whitehill Welfare LFC, Tyncastle LFC and the Civil Service Strollers
LFC but Hibernian Ladies currently rule the
city’s ladies football roost with their their position
as Premier League Champions in 2003/04. |
