Comedy In Edinburgh |
 |
 |
Say “Edinburgh” to most people and the first
word that will come into their head is “Festival”.
When people think of the festival they more often than
not think “comedy”, as Edinburgh really is
the UK’s first city of comedy.
Visitors to the Comedy Fringe Festival that takes
place every August have fond memories of seeing some of
the world’s top comedians before they made it really
big. Often this discovery was made by sitting in an empty
pub and being the only audience member to the said comedian
as he sweated and struggled his way through his act.
If you’re not haunted by the sound of one hand clapping
it’s well worth a visit to this giant of comedy
to see the stars of the future doing what they do best
and watch Edinburgh go crazy for several weeks in the
baking heat.
For those planning a visit before or after August you
won’t be disappointed, as the laughter never ends.
There’s a wide selection of comedy clubs on offer.
Places such as The Gilded Balloon [map],
Cowgate, host fantastic festival shows but also put on
regular shows throughout the year and are well worth catching.
One of Scotland’s most famous comedy venues is The
Stand [map]. With a sister venue in Glasgow, The Stand
Comedy Club [map] at York Place is one of the best clubs around. Here you’ll
see a range of Perrier award-winning and young
upstart comedians take to the stage. There’s usually
five acts a night so well worth paying the money for and
as laughter is thirsty work there’s a range of alcoholic
beverages to tide you over.
The infamous Jongleurs Comedy Club [map] has a home in
Edinburgh lining up a host of familiar names. Jongleurs
is at Greenside Place and a great night out for a group
of friends who can take advantage of a range of discounts.
The Queen’s Hall [map],
Clerk Street, is one of those less intimate venues. Here
you can see a range of top international and UK comedians
and other entertaining acts that appeal to a broad range
of visitors.
Every so often The Assembly Rooms [map],
George Street, plays host to some impressive talent. When
The Assembly Rooms put on a comedy event they really do
know how to do it in style. Recent offerings have come
from the likes of Adam Bloom, Lucy Porter,
and Andre Vincent.
