At night Edinburgh
comes alive with a range of cool and hot bars to appeal
to a variety of tastes. It is said that you can get an
alcoholic drink in Edinburgh at any time night or day,
but unless it’s that time of year when the Edinburgh
Festival rolls into town, it’s unlikely. Not that all urban myths about Edinburgh are untrue, some establishments do stay open until 5am for the very brave, but mostly drinking hours are inline with the rest of the UK. So now you know you won’t be spending a 12 hour shift on a bar crawl here’s a small selection of the very best bars that Edinburgh has to offer: Bam Bou [map], on South Bridge, is a pub with a distinctly oriental feel. Big windows and live DJs create a dreamy ambience to the place. Get a prime position upstairs away from the crowds to sit back and watch the world go by. If Vodka is your favourite tipple, you should plan a visit to Bar Kohl [map], George IV Bridge, which offers the biggest range of Vodkas in Edinburgh. This is a suave bar for those who really know their authentic Russian from their weak rip-offs. Mingle with Edinburgh’s friendly students at Nicol Edward’s [map], Niddry Street, and explore three different bars and a large chill-out lounge, perfect for a quiet evening away from the crowds. Legendary pub The Royal Oak [map], Infirmary Street, is a great place to sup a wee dram whilst enjoying some of the best live folk acts in Edinburgh, but be warned, it does get very busy during the evening. The popular Grassmarket area of Edinburgh is home to a great selection of bars and one of the best is the Beehive Inn [map]. In the shadow of Edinburgh Castle one of the Beehive’s greatest assets is it’s large beer garden. Perfect for al fresco drinking. The hippest of the hip drink at Beluga [map] , Chambers Street. On the site of Edinburgh’s old dental hospital Beluga caters for the very cool who chill out in oversized furniture and low-slung seating. It’s also the perfect place to catch some top music and live DJ performances. If you like your beer accompanied by snacks head to The Doric Tavern [map] on Market Street. This is the last word in bar food and offers tasty treats that are on a par with its sister restaurant. A good, unpretentious, place to relax or socialise.
