Set against the
magnificent backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, the city’s
first Military Tattoo took place in 1950 with just eight
items in the programme. Since then more than 11 million people have attended the event and the annual audience figure now sees around 217,000 visitors flood into the Scottish capital. But what exactly do they go to see? Three weeks of fascinating military and international entertainment on the Esplanade at the castle, that’s what. Every year the Edinburgh Tattoo begins with a vivid and intensely emotional display of Scotland's finest fighting men playing stirring tunes that over the centuries have given courage and inspiration on battlefields in every corner of the globe. These days the event also plays host to international guest performers, who bring another dimension to a familiar pageant. Since it began performers from 30 countries have presented here, but it is the pipes and drums, the heart of the Tattoo, which the Scots love fiercely and visitors quickly take to their own hearts. Although the majority of people who watch the Tattoo in the Esplanade are Scottish or from other parts of the UK, a further 100 million more watch it on television in 30 countries, making it a global phenomenon. |
