Despite only being
a small city, Edinburgh is blessed with world-class cultural
gems to rival those found elsewhere in Europe. Opened in 1998, the Museum of Scotland [map] is the newest addition to Edinburgh’s cultural family housing collections that represent the history of Scotland, its people and their achievements. This striking new landmark with its series of interlocking spaces was the result of an architectural competition to find a contemporary design for the new museum. Housing Scotland’s foremost collection of European paintings, drawings and prints, The National Gallery of Scotland [map] is one of Edinburgh’s top cultural draws. Built in the 1800s while the New Town was in its infancy, this neo-classical style building is not only home to the national collection of Scottish art but also contains work dating back to the early Renaissance. The collection boasts works by Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens and the Impressionists. Home to art of a different kind is the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art which has more than 5,000 items including important work by Cubist and Surrealists. The gallery is set in beautiful leafy grounds which showcase all-weather sculptures and the building itself holds works dating from the 1890s right up to contemporary video installations of the 1990s. For a museum that not only spans the decades but also the fascinations of man, try the Royal Museum of Scotland [map] . With exhibitions ranging from evolution and the natural world with a Blue Whale’s skeleton suspended from the roof to industrial development showing the world’s oldest steam locomotive, Wylam Dilly (1813) to jewellery and Islamic Art. This museum is a treasure trove of antiquities with something for everyone.
