Although it's the
smallest of the regions in England, London has a high
concentration of campuses spread across the city and east
London plays host to a few of the student centres.
Probably the most prominent university in the east
of the capital is the University of East London [map] with campuses in Stratford, Docklands and Barking.
The University brought together a number of local polytechnics
to create the University of East London in 1992 and
now this university alone has more than 16,000 students
studying subjects as diverse as architecture, business
and social studies. Famous alumni include Trevor Brooking,
TV pundit and West Ham Stalwart, film director Ken Russell
and Prime minister of the Dominican Republic.
Also bringing together a number of colleges to form
one centre of education is the Queen Mary College [map] (QMC). In combining four college institutions, Queen
Mary College makes use of some of the historic buildings
of the capital, the oldest having been built in 1887.
The QMC is home to Barts & The
London School of Medicine & Dentistry [map],
a major centre of research and teaching for medical
and dental subjects, but also covers subjects including
English and drama, mathematical sciences and electronic
engineering.
Students at Queen Mary College are part of the Britain’s
largest university, the University of London [map] (UOL).
Founded in 1829 the university was the first college outside
of Oxford and Cambridge, and the first to admit students
regardless of age, race or religion, setting the standard
for its international flavour. Today the University has
over 90,000 students at campuses across the capital.
