East London seems to
have something of a split personality when it comes
to places to lighten your wallet, with £100 notes
being equally as welcome as small change – as
long as you choose where to spend them appropriately! For somewhere to maximise the impact of your small change, try one of the East End’s multifaceted markets where you’ll probably leave carrying more bags than you would expect. Markets dominate east London’s shopping related offerings with more than eight in the area, however the three most well known are; Spitalfields [map], Petticoat Lane [map] and Brick Lane [map]. If you want trendy chic from your market experience then Spitalfields [map] is the place to go. Located in a glass topped Victorian building on Commercial Street, Spitalfields market hosts a multitude of stalls where up-and-coming fashion designers sell their creations, beautifully handcrafted merchandise is on offer, and on a Sunday, where fresh organic food is available to buy. Spitalfields is nearby Liverpool Street tube station and open everyday except Saturday. Close to Spitalfields is Petticoat Lane [map] market but don’t look for the street name as it doesn’t really exist. This market is over 100 years old and developed from a pig market to an area where second-hand petticoats were sold (hence the name!). These days the market goes ahead every day (except Saturdays) in Middlesex Street, Wentworth Street and the surrounding offshoots, however Sunday is considered to be the best day to go. On Sundays the market bustles with over 1000 stalls selling discounted clothes, Asian fabrics, household items, leather goods and more. Locals love Brick Lane [map] market because on a Sunday morning it’s a one-stop shop for all your needs from food to furniture. And when the shopping is done you can get a bite to eat with the money you have left at one of the curry houses, or the legendary 24-hour bagel bakery. If you want to go, head to Liverpool Street or Whitechapel tube station on a Sunday, the market opens at around 8:00am and finishes at 2:00pm. Also worth a mention is East London’s 900-year-old Billingsgate Fish Market [map]. Here you’ll find a huge variety of fish and seafood sold by friendly market characters with plenty of cockney banter from 5.30 in the morning. Although the East End markets cannot be beaten for the spendthrifts and bargain hunters, the area does have places where you can spend it like Beckham. The Laden Showroom [map], E1, is where edgy young fashion designers create celebrity craved couture. Victoria Beckham, Denise Van Outen and several other actors and pop pretenders have all gone here to get attention grabbing fashion. Men with the means can be dressed by the man who has suited Tom Cruise, Harvey Keitel, David Beckham and Jarvis Cocker at Timothy Everest’s [map] E1 fashion house. Located in a Georgian house on Elder Street the inside has a distinct men’s club feel to it, and you too can be one of the boys if you have £1000 to spend. If you prefer your fashion with a retro edge then you could venture to Rokit [map] on Brick Lane. Their eclectic range of vintage clothing includes collectables, customised clothes and accessories which have been coveted by many and have been used by fashion photographers for glossy magazine shoots. They also have stores in Camden and Brighton. For those who aren’t totally ashamed of their wardrobe and would quite like to keep the collection they’ve built up over the years, there’s Junky Styling [map] also on Brick Lane. Here you can have ‘wardrobe surgery’ where your clothes can be revamped into contemporary but unique fashion statements.
