When the kids start
to get bored with the Playstation and videos, why not
take them out and about to sample the delights of east
London. City farms are great places to take younger children because it allows them to see pigs, sheep, cows and other farmyard favourites close up. And east London is home to the biggest city farm in the country - Mudchute Farm [map] located on the Isle of Dogs. As well as the usual farm animals, Mudchute also has llamas roaming the extensive fields. As well as the farm and a park, Mudchute also has an equestrian centre, which offers lessons for children of all ages with little or no horse riding skills. Kids can also take courses in show jumping and cross-country riding. East London also has Hackney City Farm [map], which has been entertaining and educating young people since 1984. Here you’ll find chickens, pigs, geese and sheep, as well as a programme of classes to occupy their young minds. If you think the wonders of a museum might be more appropriate for your children, then there are one or two in the area you could try. The Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood [map] is often a good choice as it can be interesting for both children and parents. The museum holds memories of more than four centuries of childhood, including a wide variety of toys that will take you back to the days when your toys were the most important thing you possessed. There’s also the Thames Barrier Museum [map] with plenty of exhibits to show visitors how and why the barrier was built, as well as information on waves and other water phenomena. You’ll also find the Thames Barrier Park [map] here with its sunken garden and views across the river. From tales of Peter Pan’s battles with Captain Hook to the 2003 hit film Pirates of the Caribbean, kids have always been interested in the antics of the villains of the sea. In east London, there are plenty of real life pirate tales that revolve around Execution Dock [map] near Wapping and could make for an interesting day out. For something a little more energy sapping, you can take your young ones to the water. There are many leisure centres with swimming pools in the area but East London is also home to the Royal Victoria Dock Watersports Centre [map] where kids can learn to canoe, kayak and much more.
