Whether the term ‘sport’
conjures blissful images of standing around with a beer
in your hand or sweating profusely as you put your body
through its paces, east London has something to fulfil
your definition. The area has two football team, which have helped to establish football is the premier sport in east London. Leyton Orient FC play in Coca-Cola League Two, whilst West Ham United are currently top flight team, keeping many armchair fans busy on match days. For those who can only enjoy the sport when they have the ball between their legs, there are grass and astro turf pitches at Mile End Stadium [map], Poplar and the John Orwell Sports Centre [map] , where local teams play the national game. East London is also home to two rugby clubs both of whom play at the Holland Road ground [map]. East London RFC fields three teams, a first team, a second team and East London Phantoms, a squad consisting of local workers who love the game. All the teams are always on the look out for players to come and train with them on a Tuesday and Thursday. The other team are the Kings Cross Steelers the world's first rugby club to offer gay and bisexual men the chance to play competitive rugby. The club has not just gained recognition for its unique qualities but also for their prowess on the pitch as well. For those who like to adventure away from solid ground, east London has a number of water-based activities you can try. At the Royal Victoria Dock Watersports Centre [map] (RVDWC) you can participate in sailing, kayaking, traditional rowing and much more. And as the RVDWC is a recognised Royal Yachting Association (RYA) teaching establishment and British Canoe Union (BCU) approved centre, even if you’re knowledge of on the water activities is little or non existent you can still have fun! Just five minutes from Mile End tube station is one of the top climbing facilities in the country. Mile End Climbing Wall [map] is much more than the name suggests with approximately 16,000 sq. ft of wall space housed in an old pipe engineering works. For novices and seasoned professionals alike this centre has something for everyone. If four-legged pursuits are your sporting preference then east London has two venues for you to frequent. Walthamstow Stadium [map] is where you can watch some of the finest greyhound racing at a local venue. If getting involved is more to your liking then head for the Docklands Equestrian Centre [map]. This busy centre offers basic riding instruction on ponies and horses in the heart of the Docklands area. Swimming, badminton, netball and other indoor pursuits can be done at one of the many leisure centres across the east region including St George’s Pool [map], York Hall [map] , and Tiller Leisure Centre [map] in Docklands. |
