Although cockles
and mussels are “alive alive oh!” in the East
End you’ll find that the home of the jellied eel
has a much more appealing range of food for those in search
of sustenance. East London has a great mix of chic eateries and delicious dining dens and as the area grows in stature so do the number of places there are to indulge your taste buds. The top names include the award-winning St John Bread and Wine [map] good for lunch, dinner and something in between, Cantaloupe [map] for its vibrancy and Café Naz [map] for contemporary Indian and Bangladeshi food. But you’ll also find a chic Parisian bistro in Café Rouge [map], elegant riverside dining at Jamies [map] and trendy Japanese minimalism at Upon [map] - all in the revamped Canary Wharf and Docklands areas. But the east end hasn’t entirely lost seafood from it’s menu with the cheekily named Winkles [map], however for a proper ‘cockney’ feast try one of London’s pie and mash shops like G Kelly. They were the fast food establishments of their time, even preceding fish and chip shops, and there are several still in the East End as the area tries to recapture its past for tourists and curiosity seekers.
