The UK’s national
pastime gets supporters’ passions pumping at least
once a week – but London’s east side has
some of the most fervent football fans in the capital. East Londoners putting their faith in a local team can choose either, West Ham or Leyton Orient. By far the most successful of these is West Ham who currently play in the Premiership, where team takes on the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool. The team, nicknamed ‘the hammers” began life in 1895 as the Thames Ironworks team. More than 100 years on, the team are still going strong, playing at the 25,000+ capacity Boleyn Ground (named after King Henry VIII's wife) which is more commonly called Upton Park [map] because of its proximity to the tube station of the same name. Bobby Moore, Sir Geoff Hurst and Trevor Brooking have all played for this top east end club where on match days you’ll hear the team’s anthem “I’m forever blowing bubbles” ring out. Leyton Orient on the other hand have not been able to match the success of their neighbour and in the 03/04 season were sliding down the league with little sign of being able to reverse the trend. The club are, however, one of the oldest in the country, starting out in 1881 as a way for the Glyn Cricket Club [map] team to keep fit outside the summer cricket season. Over the years the club has changed its name several times finally deciding on the name which combines its location with the Orient Shipping line of the 1800s. The team now play at the 12,000+ capacity Matchroom Stadium [map] in Leyton, where supporter’s flock on match days showing that whatever the league future holds for this club, it will always remain an important part of the community. |
