In terms of fine dining
East London can offer you gourmet cuisine from some
of the Uk’s top chefs without the West End pretension
– simply good food without the ego. Designer, retailer and restaurateur Sir Terrance Conran has added an east London haunt to his ever-growing empire of international establishments. Plateau [map] is a calm oasis of glass and chrome above the bustle of Canary Wharf. And the menu of this £2 million venture boasts grouse, venison and suckling pig and a comprehensive wine list. If fish is the favourite of the day then you could enjoy it with a large helping of London views at The Aquarium [map] . Located at St Katherine’s Dock E1, this modern waterfront eatery is predominately a seafood restaurant but does offer meat dishes as part of their BBQ menu. While waterfront dining may be the ultimate way to enjoy seafood, there is one way you can get closer to the action and that’s by dining on the water. Lightship Ten [map] is a restaurant housed in the oldest lightship in the world. Lovingly restored to create an atmospheric eating environment, here you can enjoy an eclectic range of cuisine as you gently rock to the relaxed atmosphere. Elegance and exquisite dining combine at Quadrato [map], found at east London’s only five star hotel, the Four Seasons [map]. This is not only considered to be one the finest Italian restaurants north of the Thames but one of the best eateries in London. St John Bread and Wine [map] is the east side sibling to the trendy St John [map] restaurant in Clerkenwell. With all the contemporary style of its older brother but without an understated menu which appeals to hungry bellies. Fusing Japanese and Peruvian flavours Ubon [map] (by Nobu) is another establishment with a West End sibling. Celebrities flock to Nobu for its trendy minimalism much of which Ubon has retained with the addition of floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the Thames.
