With the invasion of
“the suit” occurring across east London
you may feel that finding a proper east end partner
who sups real ale and knows the football offside rule,
are being pushed out of the area. But if that’s
what you’re looking for in a partner, or if you
like someone with a sense of adventure, then you’re
sure to find a few in the following establishments.
Claiming to be the oldest pub along the river, The
Prospect of Whitby [map] is steeped in history. This
wateringhole is filled with nautical brick-a-brac but
the oldest item in the pub is the 400 year old flagstones.
In the past the riverside tavern used to be a meeting
place for pirates while bare knuckle fighting used to
happen upstairs. Today however the clientele come for
the good ale and good food while taking in the views
of the Thames from the terrace.
The Alfred Hitchcock Hotel [map] honours one of the East End’s greatest sons. As
a film director, Hitchcock achieved international success
and this Leytonstone pub celebrates the man behind the
movies. Although the South African cuisine has little
to do with the man himself, the walls of the pub are adorned
with pictures and it even has copies of the great man’s
birth and marriage certificates. Bring your date here
if you want to explore any movie passions you may have
in common while showing off your eclectic taste in drinking
holes.
With a choice of real ales, decent cider and pickled eggs
sold behind the bar the Birkbeck Tavern [map] has a warm east end welcome waiting for you. This pub
has a genuine local feel to it and may be a little quiet
if you’re on the pull. But on quiz night this venue
attracts the crowds and increases your chances of ensnaring
an intelligent one.
For a sociable local that won’t have people reaching
for their sticks as soon as a stranger walks through the
door try the North Star pub [map] on Browning Road, if you don’t get the girl
at least you’ll get a good pint.
The Bell pub [map] in Leytonstone is also worth a mention
because in addition to its original features the wall
is also adorned with a signed photo of Joanna Lumley…
well it’s something to draw on if the conversation
is lacking!
