With the invasion of
“the suit” occurring across east London

As a film director, Hitchcock achieved international success and this Leytonstone pub celebrates the man behind the movies. Although the South African cuisine has little to do with the man himself, the walls of the pub are adorned with pictures and it even has copies of the great man’s birth and marriage certificates. Bring your date here if you want to explore any movie passions you may have in common while showing off your eclectic taste in drinking holes. With a choice of real ales, decent cider and pickled eggs sold behind the bar the Birkbeck Tavern [map] has a warm east end welcome waiting for you. This pub has a genuine local feel to it and may be a little quiet if you’re on the pull. But on quiz night this venue attracts the crowds and increases your chances of ensnaring an intelligent one. For a sociable local that won’t have people reaching for their sticks as soon as a stranger walks through the door try the North Star pub [map] on Browning Road, if you don’t get the girl at least you’ll get a good pint. The Bell pub [map] in Leytonstone is also worth a mention because in addition to its original features the wall is also adorned with a signed photo of Joanna Lumley… well it’s something to draw on if the conversation is lacking!
