The East End of
London has always been thought of as working class and
although the revitalisation of the area is attracting
Armani and Boateng suits there are still places where
you can eat without having to pawn your valuables. Many of the more affordable places to eat have grown out of the culinary culture of the waves of immigrants the area has seen over the years. The Limehouse area [map] was London’s original Chinatown and although today there is little left of area some budget oriental eats remain in East London, namely Good Friends, Lennie’s and The Thai Hut. Brick Lane has been renamed “Bangla Town” as it is the home of London’s Bangladeshi community. Here you will find Preem where you can have a starter and a main course for under a tenner! They also offer cooking lessons so you can attempt to repeat the experience with all your leftovers one Wednesday evening. Cheap Indian eats in the form of vegetable curries and mango lassis can also be found at New Tayyab [map] E1. E1 is also home to the highly regarded Lahore Kebab House [map]. Although the ‘grubby canteen’ first impression may not be the most enticing, there is culinary gold in this Pakistani eatery. A wide range of vegetarian curries can be found at Ronak Restaurant [map] in Forest Gate, and nut roasts and vegan chocolate cake is available for vegans and vegetarians with light wallets at Pumpkins [map] in Hackney. However traditional east London fare is still pie, mash and liquor (thin parsley sauce) and fortunately this is one food fetish that you won’t be priced out of is you’re lacking in cash. L Manze [map] on Walthamstow High Street is one of the many places you can a meat pie, mashed potato with some parsley garnish for under £5. In fact if you’re flush enough to have a whole five pounds you could even stretch to a coffee to finish. If you hanker for the BBQ taste of America then Arkansas Café [map] in Old Spitalfields Market should have you salivating. With ribs, burgers, sausages and some Pecan pie available too you should be able to eat here and still be able to afford a bargain or two in the market.
