Drinking in the East
End may conjure images of cockney wide boys swilling
ale and “givin’ it all that” but take
off the tinted glasses and you’ll find some great
places to drink and be merry! Once the social ugly duckling the East End is being transformed into a hip, and swanky swan that keeps people flocking. The Light [map] on Shoreditch High Street is typical of the bars you’ll find on the east side. Formerly an electric light station, the brick and steel interior accentuate the trendy-feel of the surroundings. In a similar vain 1802 in Canary Wharf offers the usual cocktails with a loft-styled backdrop. One of the areas newer additions is the South African themed Zulus [map] in Leytonstone. With its wood interior and a volleyball court where the beer garden should be, this place attracts a relaxed weekday crowd. Complete with uber cool décor, 93 Feet East [map] on Brick Lane is the all-in-one venue for those who like to combine a night of chatty drinks with some funky moves at the end of the night. Glamour girls should head for Loungelover [map] where you’ll find a fashionable curiosity-shop styled interior with champagne cocktails served in suitably chic glassware. The numerous awards and plush surrounding means it’s certainly somewhere to impress the girls. If the pomp and circumstance of the cocktail scene doesn’t appeal east London has several bars which encapsulate the other extreme. The George & Dragon [map] on Hackney Road is one such example with its traditional wood interior and cocktails served in half-pint mugs. Expect to see a ringlet-haired tranny behind the bar and taste one of the best bloody marys in London. For a place where the beer is bountiful head to The Dove [map]. This warm and welcoming pub has over 101 Belgian bottled beers on offer to tantalise your taste buds including fruity flavoured versions of the beverage.
