Durham may only have one theatre but it still offers a
great choice of drama, music and comedy to make your night out one to remember. There are also a few other venues within a short drive of the city where you can catch a touring West End musical or the best in local entertainment. Situated on Millennium Place in the heart of the central Durham, the Gala Theatre [map] is the city’s one and only venue for top class drama and music events. It forms part of Durham’s new Millennium City development and is housed in a complex that also comprises of a visitor centre, cinema, tourist information centre, café bars and a restaurant. The theatre, which is also used for balls, concerts and conferences, has been specially designed to provide superb views and an intimate atmosphere that enhances the live experience for audiences and performers alike. Around 20 minutes drive from Durham city centre, you’ll find the Empire Theatre [map] in Sunderland, which is the region’s largest theatre and regularly plays host to top West End shows. Opened in 1907 by Vesta Tilley, the Empire is a splendid example of Edwardian theatre architecture. For classic Shakespeare, contemporary drama, comedy and jazz head to the Darlington Civic Theatre [map] or the Arts Centre [map], both located in Darlington town centre, which is a 30 minutes from Durham.
