Situated four miles from the city centre, Miner's Cottage [map] in the scenic village of Tudhoe, is a two-bedroom house with a garden and all the usual home comforts. The cottage is on a bus route with frequent services to Durham, Newcastle and the MetroCentre, while the village also has plenty of amenities, including two pubs serving bar meals, a post office and delicatessen. A few miles from Durham in the neighbouring town of Consett you’ll find Boltslaw Cottage [map], a historic stone cottage set in beautiful moorland in the Pennine hills. Many of the original historic features have been retained while the old log stove and new central heating combine to give the place a warm and cosy feel. There is also a garden with marvellous views and a terrace with barbecue and garden furniture. If you want to escape the hustle of city life why not stay in the countryside around Barnard Castle, about 10 miles from Durham city centre. Among the properties to rent here are the Romaldirk Holiday Cottages [map], a number of stone built detached properties located on a working farm in the heart of the village of Romaldkirk. These properties include, Lowgreen Farm House, which has four bedrooms and a sofa bed in the lounge and can accommodate up to 12 people. There's also the converted stables of Ashwood Lodge, which sleeps up to 14, has five bathrooms and a large lounge leading on to a private patio with lovely views. Finally in Romaldirk, Bide-A-Wee is a cosy cottage, with flagged floors and beamed ceilings, which is perfect for a family holiday. It has two bedrooms, a bathroom and separate shower, dining room with open fire, lounge, kitchen and a patio. Also in the Barnard Castle area you’ll find Riverdale Cottage [map], a Grade II listed building that is tucked away down a leafy lane close to the River Tees. Originally built in 1860 as a farm out-building, it was lovingly renovated in 1996 to provide a cosy cottage with romantic couples in mind. Situated nine miles south west of Durham city centre close to Bishop Auckland, Five Gables Cottage [map] is a restored 19th century miner's cottage opposite the owners’ guest house. The two-bedroom house has been completely refurbished with facilities for five guests, along with a garden and parking to the front and side. And for the energetic there is a public footpath opposite the cottage, which leads to fields, woods and the Auckland Walk.
