Luxury Hotels in Durham |
 |
 |
Durham is not just
about beauty, history and friendly faces; it’s also
a city of extravagance and luxury so make the most of
your stay here by splashing out on a room at a swanky
hotel.
One of the most stylish and well known hotels in Durham
is the Ramside Hall Classic Hotel and Golf Club [map] on the outskirts of the city centre. This four star accommodation
is located just 400 metres from junction 62 of the A1(M)
motorway and is set in 220 acres of parkland with a 27-hole championship golf course.
The oldest part of the hall dates back to 1820, but its
the stylish extensions that have transformed the Ramside
into the magnificent hotel it is today. Each of the 80
en suite bedrooms here are individually decorated
and furnished, and all have tea/coffee making facilities,
hairdryer, satellite TV with in-room movies, radio, direct
dial telephones, iron and trouser press and fresh fruit.
There are also a number of premier and feature bedrooms
that have the added luxury of a whirlpool bath and large
bathrooms.
Ramside Hall boasts a restaurant overlooking the impressive
gardens and fountain, along with a bistro and café-bar.
Then when you are ready to work off your meal, the golf
course comprises of three loops of nine holes with large
areas of mature woodland, 14 lakes and bunkers, while
the hotel also has a sauna and steam room.
Next up is the Kings Lodge Hotel [map],
which is located in the heart of Durham City and is certainly
the place to go if you’re celeb spotting.
Like so many buildings in Durham, this hotel stands on
land of great historic importance, this being the site
of the Battle of Nevilles Cross in 1346, at which,
the invading army of King David of Scotland was beaten
off by English troops led by Ralph Neville and Henry Percy.
Fortunately the area is now the setting for comfortable
and tasteful residence, fine dining at the prestigious Knight’s Restaurant, a cosy traditional bar,
and quality afternoon teas.
Also situated in the city centre and part of a national
chain, the Durham Marriott Hotel [map] lies close to the impressive cathedral and castle. Luxuriously
furnished throughout and with fine views over the River
Wear, this hotel is undoubtedly one of the region's
premier places to stay. Each bedroom has satellite TV
and a minibar, while the award-winning leisure club offers a range of facilities for guests, including an
indoor pool, spa, gym and unique sanarium (that’s
a combined sauna and steam room to you and I).
And as if just to keep in with the others on this page,
the hotel also has its own historical connection as the
building was developed from a series of Jacobean town
houses that were once owned by the Bowes-Lyon family, ancestors of the Queen Mother.
If you fancy staying outside central Durham but still
want top class accommodation, why not book your room at
the Lumley Castle Hotel [map] in nearby Chester-Le-Street. Dating back to the 14th
century, it was built as a manor house before being converted
to a castle in 1392, when it played host to kings and
princes. Nearly 600 years later, in 1972, it was transformed
into a plush hotel. Here every room is different and each
one is filled with historical artefacts, some even have
a four-poster bed or a bathroom hidden behind the door
of a bookcase.
Back in the city centre is the Swallow Three Tuns Hotel [map], which is set in a former 16th century coaching
inn. It has retained many of its original features, such
as oak beams, a magnificent stained glass ceiling and
open fireplaces. Guests can also make use of the leisure
facilities that include a swimming pool, spa bath, plunge
pool and extensively equipped gym.
