Durham is not just

Ramside Hall boasts a restaurant overlooking the impressive gardens and fountain, along with a bistro and café-bar. Then when you are ready to work off your meal, the golf course comprises of three loops of nine holes with large areas of mature woodland, 14 lakes and bunkers, while the hotel also has a sauna and steam room. Next up is the Kings Lodge Hotel [map], which is located in the heart of Durham City and is certainly the place to go if you’re celeb spotting. Like so many buildings in Durham, this hotel stands on land of great historic importance, this being the site of the Battle of Nevilles Cross in 1346, at which, the invading army of King David of Scotland was beaten off by English troops led by Ralph Neville and Henry Percy. Fortunately the area is now the setting for comfortable and tasteful residence, fine dining at the prestigious Knight’s Restaurant, a cosy traditional bar, and quality afternoon teas. Also situated in the city centre and part of a national chain, the Durham Marriott Hotel [map] lies close to the impressive cathedral and castle. Dating back to the 14th century, it was built as a manor house before being converted to a castle in 1392, when it played host to kings and princes. Here every room is different and each one is filled with historical artefacts, some even have a four-poster bed or a bathroom hidden behind the door of a bookcase. Back in the city centre is the Swallow Three Tuns Hotel [map], which is set in a former 16th century coaching inn. It has retained many of its original features, such as oak beams, a magnificent stained glass ceiling and open fireplaces.
