The best way to
get to know the real Durham is to get to know the locals,
and where better to do that than at one of the city’s
friendly and welcoming B&Bs. Run by residents usually willing to share their knowledge of the place, bed and breakfast accommodation is a great choice if you want to feel part of the community. Undoubtedly the grandest B&B in Durham, and perhaps the North East of England, is the historic Durham Castle [map], where you can stay in a stateroom fit for a king and eat breakfast in the Great Hall. As the place is now home to students at the University of Durham, some of the rooms here are only available during the summer months, although the staterooms are available all year round (except Christmas). As well as the Great Hall dining area, where you can enjoy lunch and evening meals if you choose, residents can also make use of the Undercroft Lounge Bar, which open from 6:00pm to 11:00pm daily. One of Durham’s most well known B&Bs is the Three Horseshoes Inn [map], a comfortable traditional country inn with a well stocked cellar, good food and top class accommodation. There is a function room available for small parties and celebrations, while the immaculate bedrooms are tastefully decorated and fully equipped for all your needs. All rooms overlook the Durham countryside. Situated just a short walk from the cathedral, castle, city centre and the River Wear, the Georgian Town House [map] on Crossgate offers wonderful views and comfortable rooms. This B&B is set in a Grade II listed building in the heart of Durham and is easily accessible from the A1(M) motorway and the city’s train and bus stations. Other B&Bs located close to the city centre include Cathedral View Town House [map] on Gilesgate, a Grade II Listed Georgian townhouse overlooking Durham cricket ground, and Moor End House Bed & Breakfast [map], a 19th century stone-built house close to some excellent pub and restaurants. For something a little different try the Bay Horse Inn [map], which is situated three miles from central Durham in Brandon Village. Here you’ll find ten stone built en suite chalets, with central heating, TV, telephone, tea/coffee making facilities and hairdryer. As well as a cooked breakfast every morning, you can also have restaurant and bar meals. Finally, for a countryside setting head to Low Esh Farm [map] in Esh Village, an 18th century stone farmhouse set in a working farm. Close to Durham’s main tourist attractions but situated in open countryside, the hotel offers spacious and comfortable rooms with up-to-date facilities and full English breakfast every morning.
