Held in early December,
this festival takes place throughout the city and features
singers, dancers, street entertainers and musicians. A major exhibition in the Town Hall showcases work by craftspeople and artists from the region, including goldsmiths, potters, photographers and wood turners. This is a great opportunity to find unique and original gifts not found on the High Street. On Palace Green, with the stunning backdrop of the magnificent castle and cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), is an enormous marquee selling crafts, gifts and speciality foods – an Aladdin’s cave of tempting Christmas gifts. The 2004 festival saw Father Christmas travel all the way from Rovaniemi in Finland – considered to be his official home, to Durham for the Christmas Festival. The visit marked the City of Durham becoming the official UK link to the home of Father Christmas and featured a signing ceremony in the city for this new agreement. Durham is a beautiful historic city that has been celebrating Christmas for almost 1,000 years. It is worth a visit at any time of year, but especially during December when it can be enjoyed at its festive best.
