Whether you want to sit back and let the professionals
entertain you or take to the floor yourself and learn
some impressive steps, there’s a range of dance
venues, shows and classes to suit everybody.
Central London is home to two of the most important dance
schools in the UK. The Central School Of Ballet [map],
Herbal Hill, Clerkenwell Road, is one of the most respected
ballet schools in the world. The school was founded in
1982 by Christopher Gable and Ann Stannard and quickly
established itself as a forerunner in the teaching of
ballet. With a strong ethos of personal development, the
school offers a range of courses to those with exceptional
ballet skills as well as those who just want to get fit
and have fun.
Over in West Central London, The London Contemporary
Dance School [map] at The Place on Dukes Road, offers vocational training
for dancers, choreographers, and dance artists. The Place
itself is a powerhouse of contemporary dance offering
a wide range of tuition and performances. Everyone who’s
ever dreamed of taking to the stage should include a visit
to The Place in his or her itinerary of London.
If you’ve always dreamed of cutting a dash on the
dance floor like a pop princess or member of a boy band The Pineapple Dance Studios [map],
Langley Street, will be able to help you fulfil your dreams.
Many stars have passed through the Pineapple doors since
it was founded in 1979 and there’s a range of accessible
classes available. Whether you want to try cheerleading,
break-dancing, or street style, Pineapple has more than
180 classes a week.
London Swing Dance Society [map],
Rashleigh House, offers fitness classes for all abilities
in anything from Lindy Hop to the Charleston but a sense
of fun and some rhythm is helpful.
Once you’ve mastered swing you might want to head
to Break for the Border [map],
Goslett Yard, off Charing Cross Road, for dinner and dancing
in a relaxed and intimate environment.
Get the children involved too with designated classes
available at Biodanza [map],
Shelton Street, Covent Garden, and Capoeira, at The Place [map],
Duke’s Road. Not only will these fun classes tire
them out, they’ll also be keeping fit and making
friends along the way.
If you’re looking for the perfect pair of shoes
in which to perform your tap or salsa there’s a
range of excellent dance shops centrally located.
Head to Gamba [map],
Garrick Street, or Dancia International [map],
Drury Lane, or check out The Pineapple Dance Studios,
mentioned above, which has a wide selection of shoes and
clothing for dance and rest time.
