If you’re hoping to see some football during in your stay in Cardiff we’re sure you won’t be disappointed. With a Coca Cola Championship club, FIFA World Cup qualifying games and plenty of public pitches, the Welsh capital has a lot to offer football fans.
If you want to see Cardiff City FC in action then you’ll need to head down to their stadium at Ninian Park [map] when there is a home match on. The club plays in the newly created Coca Cola Championship (previously Nationwide League Division One) so you could get to see them play the likes of Leeds United and Leicester City.
There is a shop at Ninian Park where you can buy Cardiff City replica football shirts and other team merchandise. You can also pick up a football shirt from one of the many sports shops, such as JJB Sports, in the city centre shopping area.
For those of you who want to see some international football then the Millennium Stadium – which has the first retractable roof in the UK – is the perfect venue for you.
As well as being home to the Welsh Rugby Union team, the 74,500 seater stadium is also set to play host to a number of FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, including Wales verses England and Wales against Poland.
At these games you’ll get to see top footballers such as ‘Welsh Wizard’ Ryan Giggs and England stars David Beckham and Michael Owen in action.
If you’d rather play football than watch it you’re in luck because there are plenty of pitches around Cardiff where you can have a kickabout with your mates or even join in a real match.
There are more than 40 outdoor leisure locations across the city that boast 114 senior football pitches and 29 mini soccer pitches. In addition to these, floodlit pitches are available at Heath Sports Centre [map], Eastern [map], Pentwyn [map] and Western Leisure Centres [map] and Channel View Centre [map]. |
