If you’re looking for a great day out for all the family, why not head to the beautiful town of Newmarket [map] and its exciting racecourse.
Horses have been a part of community life for most Newmarket folk for as long back as anyone can remember. The chalk heathland surrounding the town was popular for the display of horse riding skills in medieval times, and from this time horseracing was established and enjoyed royal patronage from James I at Newmarket, a tradition that has existed ever since.
From the number of shops selling sporting goods and memorabilia to the art galleries with an equine theme, horseracing has touched every area of life here.
The racecourse is the longest of its kind in the world and those visiting during July should try to see at least one July meeting. These run throughout the month into August and usually take place in the evening, which allows visitors to lap up the glorious sunny evenings as they bet on a potential winner.
Children can even join in the fun at the annual NSPCC Family Fun day (usually held during the last week of July). There’s plenty to see and do, with bouncy castles, fairground rides and free ice-creams the order of the day.
Ladies are not left out of the picture and if you weren’t in time to get your ticket to Ladies Day at Ascott, fear not as early July brings Newmarket’s own Ladies Day and a chance to don a hat and get dressed up for the occasion or take along a picnic of strawberries and champagne.
Newmarket Racecourse can be found at Westfield House, The Links, Cambridge Road. |
