Cambridge Folk Festival

Cambridge Folk Festival Visit Cambridge during the later part of July and you might hear the soft strains of guitar cords as they float through the light summer air.

Even if you don’t have a tuneful bone in your body, it’s hard to ignore the BBC Radio 2 Cambridge Folk Festival that has been entertaining visitors for some 40 years.

More than 10,000 people descend on the city every year for this three-day event that brings together some of the world’s top-class musical performers. From reggae legends like Jimmy Cliff to home grown talent, there’s something for every ear.

The festival attracts a wide range of fans crossing every generation, who gather at Cherry Hinton Hall [map] to see some excellent headlining acts. In the past the likes of indie-pop combo The Divine Comedy, Portuguese Opera sensation Mariza and Cambridge favourite Loudon Wainwright III have performed to eager audiences.

Traditional acts like singer-songwriter Ralph McTell and Gaelic musicians still manage to engage the crowd but there’s plenty of world music to lap up too, from the likes of Cajun kings to American Blues singers. If it’s got rhythm, soul and heart, it’s bound to be played, heard and appreciated at the Cambridge Folk Festival.
