| If you’re
tired of hearing about the same football teams competing
in the same boring old Premiership (see Manchester United
and Arsenal) and fancy seeing the sport how it was meant
to be played without the big bucks and huge sponsorship,
it’s time you paid a visit to Cambridge United
Football Club [map], Newmarket Road, Abbey Stadium.
Here you’ll see some of the best lower division
football around and many of the talented players who may
eventually be transferred to the Premiership.
Never reaching the top league, Cambridge has still managed
to pull off some great victories including becoming Division
Three champions in 1990-91 and Division Four champions in 1976-77.
Cambridge United Football Club has had its fair share
of heroes. Tom Finney went on to play for Northern
Ireland, Steve Spriggs made 417 league appearances
and Alan Biley took Cambridge to near-victory in
the golden era of 1975-1980 with an impressive 74 goals.
The stands aren’t particularly modern or luxurious
but the whole community supports this struggling club
through thick and thin. Tickets can be purchased from
£10-14 for adults and children and concessions from
£4-£5 depending on who Cambridge is playing.
