From the floodlights of the Bristol City Ground [map] to the intense atmosphere of Gloucestershire County Cricket Clubm [map], there’s plenty of sport happening across the Bristol region.
The golfer in your family will be pleased to know that there are several excellent golf courses in the area, including the beautiful Manor House Gold Club [map] at Castle Combe, and The Woodlands Golf and Country Club [map] in Almondsbury, which is situated on the edge of the Severn Valley.
If you like to taste the great outdoors you’ll find a range of activities to suit you and your family at High Action [map] in Winscombe. As the name of the centre suggests, there are plenty of adrenaline pumping activities to try including rock climbing and abseiling, but because of its location – in acres of beautiful woodland and parkland – you’ll also be able to take advantage of gentler activities such as pony trekking and tobogganing.
Active children and big kids at heart will also have plenty of fun at Bristol Indoor Paintball [map] in Kingswood. The entrance fee includes gun and safety equipment, all you need to bring is enthusiasm and stamina to make sure that your team avoids getting splattered.
Alternatively, get your skates on and head to The Bristol Ice Rink [map] on Frogmore Street for a great day of family fun. You can also take lessons here if you’re too wobbly to stay upright.
Staying with a wintry theme, you don’t need snow to take advantage of some of the best skiing in the area. The Avon Ski Centre [map] can be found on Lyncombe Drive in Churchill, and is an exhilarating way to learn to ski on realistic slopes.
Bristol has strong links with seafaring and so it wouldn’t be fair to talk about activities in this area without mentioning some of the many watersports you could pursue.
Portishead Yacht and Sailing Club [map] on Bolton Road is one of the premier clubs in the country and a great place to learn the basics of sailing from trained professionals. The club specialises in teaching families and complete novices.
One of the oldest rowing clubs in the region can be found at Saltford. The Avon County Rowing Club [map] has been established for more than 100 years and offers rowing for people of all ages and abilities. Training is also offered to coaches and umpires. Even if you’re a beginner you’ll soon be perfecting some masterstrokes here.
There are also a great number of swimming pools, both council-run and independently owned in which to practice your strokes.
If this all sounds too stressful, why not take a leisurely afternoon off and head to Bristol Water Fisheries [map], Woodford Lodge, Stoke Hill, for a spot of trout fishing. Day permits are available and there’s also specially adapted boats for wheelchair users.
If you, or someone in your family, has a disability there’s a great centre in Bristol called Bristol Ability Sports Club [map] that can provide a range of sporting activities with support from qualified coaches. The Club runs after school and during the holidays at St Paul’s Community Sports Academy on Newfoundland Road. |
