| If you’re
looking for a fun day out for all the family, why not
head into the Somerset countryside and join the friendly
crowds who flock to Wincanton Racecourse [map].
This award-winning racecourse is one of the biggest attractions
in the area, and, as any race fan worth their salt will
tell you, races here feature some of the best National
Hunt horses in the country.
Wincanton is thought to have been the scene of some of
the earliest steeplechases ever held in the world. Matches
between hunting folk were a feature of the area’s
countryside and by the beginning of the 19th century, Easter Monday at Wincanton had become
a recognised fixture, although steeplechasing was not
a great public attraction until the 1830’s.
In 1861 the National Hunt Committee was formed to regulate
steeplechasing and the Wincanton Hunt Steeplechases were instituted under National Hunt rules.
In 1913 the racecourse became known under its present
title of Wincanton Races Co, and has since developed to
its modern form, whilst retaining many traditions and
staying close to its roots.
Wincanton Racecourse has invested £1.6 million in
upgrading the facilities since 2001 and is midway through
a £3 million redevelopment.
There are three enclosures from which to watch the racing.
The Premier enclosure offers excellent views of
the course, and a choice of bars and restaurants. Visitors
to the Premier enclosure have access to all areas of the
course, including the parade ring, winners enclosure and
viewing area.
There's also the Grandstand enclosure, which allows access to the parade ring as well as offering
a range of food and drink outlets. And from the Course
enclosure there are views from all the stands and
lawns, and it is also a favourite spot for race-goers
to picnic. This is the enclosure to take youngsters or
if you want a fun, yet casual, day out.
Wincanton Racecourse can be found in Wincanton, Somerset,
which is around 17 miles from Bristol City Centre.
