Live Music in Brighton |
 |
 |
Whatever your taste in music there’s bound to be a venue in
Brighton where you can enjoy an evening of live musical entertainment.
The city’s premier spot for major gigs is the Brighton Centre
[map]
on Kings Road, which has a 5,000 capacity auditorium. Stars who have
performed here in the past include Van Morrison, Shirley Bassey and
Michael Crawford, as well as a number of up-and-coming bands.
This centre is also renowned as an exhibition and conference space,
playing host to the Labour Party Conference on a number of
occasions.
To see some of the hottest DJs around in action get along to Event
II [map],
which doubles as a nightclub and gig venue. The music is fairly mainstream,
with many dance, R‘n’B and indie acts playing here.
For a chance to see the best local bands of the moment head to the
Black Horse [map]
in the North Laine district, which has a very friendly and laid-back
atmosphere. The pub attracts a clientele of musical minds, with regular
jam sessions and performances by local bands, while some people even
bring their own records to play.
A mix of new and well known bands play at The Freebutt [map]
pub off Grand Parade, which has long been a favourite gigging
venue in Brighton. Although the main area is fairly spacious with
a pool table and fruit machines, the stage just around the other side
is probably about the same size as your front room. It’s mainly
local indie and punk bands that play here but the pub also attracts
musicians from abroad as well as featuring the occasional hip hop
night.
If jazz is more your musical style then head for the aptly named Jazz
Rooms [map]
in The Lanes area of town, which has become a bit of an institution
in Brighton. This venue offers some fine live jazz mixed with excellent
funky records.
Finally, for something altogether different pay a visit to Los
Amigos [map]
on Church Road in Hove, which provides a wonderful mix of fine Latin
food, live salsa music and plenty of beer, wine and cocktails.
