The number of country
retreats may not come close to the choice of seafront hotels on offer
in Brighton, but if you want to unwind in idyllic surroundings there
a few rural hotels on offer close to the city.
Located near Hastings about half an hour from central Brighton, you’ll
find the Beauport Park Country Hotel [map],
a fine house set in 33 acres of woodland and picturesque gardens.
All guest rooms have private bathrooms and there is a heated swimming
pool in the grounds along with tennis and badminton courts, outdoor
chess and an 18-hole golf course.
The hotel is also perfectly located for country walks, horse riding
(there are stables in the grounds) or just sitting back, putting your
feet up and chilling out.
For the ultimate in luxury head to Ashdown Park Hotel and Country
Club [map]
at Forest Row, less than an hour from Brighton. This Four Red Star
Victorian mansion, set in 186 acres of parkland, with a secret garden,
lakes and woodland trails, has 106 individually designed bedrooms.
Whether you are in a couple or travelling with a family there's accommodation
to suit, as the hotel welcomes children and has family rooms available.
At Ashdown Park you'll also find the award-winning Anderida
Restaurant along with plenty of leisure facilities, including an indoor
swimming pool, saunas, whirlpool, treatment rooms and hair salon.
While for the more energetic there is an 18-hole par-3 golf course,
driving range, fitness studio and tennis courts.
For a more historic setting why not check into Shelley’s
Hotel [map],
a graceful 17th century manor house set in the heart of Lewes that
was once owned by the famous poet's family. Shelley’s is just
seven miles from Brighton and is situated close to the remains of
a Norman castle. It is also convenient for exploring the South Downs
and Glyndebourne.
Shelley's Hotel offers luxurious accommodation, including a fine garden
where guests can take morning coffee or afternoon tea, a well-stocked
bar and a cosy lounge.
If you want to sample country life in West Sussex head for the Hickstead
Hotel [map],
about an hour from Brighton city centre. Here you can explore the
local historic towns with their shops, castles and narrow streets
or just relax in the comfortable surroundings of the hotel. All the
rooms have en suite bathroom, satellite TV, radio, direct dial telephone,
tea and coffee making facilities, newspaper delivery, hairdryer, trouser
press, hospitality tray and a laundry service. In addition, as a guest
here you can also enjoy full access to the health club, which includes
an indoor swimming pool, gym, and sauna.
Then when you're ready to eat there's the hotel's Sussex Gate Restaurant,
which offers a tranquil atmosphere, imaginative international flavours
and a sophisticated wine list, whilst The Grange Bar is perfect
for after-dinner drinks.
